Carnival 2008

Below are photos of the Carnival in Nicaragua, on Carretera Masaya, taken yesterday. Although beautiful and quite festive, it was not well attended - less so last year. Being one of the big events here in Nicaragua, it is not heavily advertised as not so many expats (and even Nicaraguans we know) know when it's going to be. I think, I think, it's held every first Saturday of March...don't quote me, as I'm not sure.

We learned about this last year by accident. Coming back from a day trip to the beach (also a Saturday), we realized that we needed bread for our Sunday brunch. So, instead of making an early turn on Carretera Masaya, we forged on to pass by the nearest grocery, therefore chancing upon people in costumes getting ready for the parade.

This year, we asked friends if they wanted to join us for the carnival - ummm, like 2 days before as that's the only time we managed to confirm it ourselves - most, if not all have already made plans as they had no inkling that there would be anything going on in the streets of Managua this weekend, hmmm strange (I did read about it in the papers but sure was easy to miss).

Anyway, next year, we plan to make an event of it. As we (try to) regularly host sundowners, we'll inform people in advance and continue the party on the streets afterwards.
